Each individual is like a fingerprint. Similar to the others but unique and unrepeatable. Like an imprint, we begin life with the form given to us by nature, later shaped by experiences. The meaningful experiences of relationship and affection are unique in turn, with parents, with siblings, friends, love. The patient therapist relationship is an experience full of uniqueness, it is essential to find the psychologist with whom to feel understood, free to express oneself and to ally, to start together the path for a qualitatively better life.
Psychotherapy is important when an individual develops mental and bodily defenses against the desire for pleasure, which in childhood has been the cause of severe anxiety. When a situation contains a promise of pleasure coupled with the threat of suffering, we feel anxiety. The defense does not totally block all the impulses in search of pleasure, however it causes suffering, problems and dysfunctions in relationships, especially the most important and significant ones: parents / children, brothers / sisters, wife / husband, companions of love, friendship and knowledge intimate. Every defense, by placing a limit on life, is also a partial death, a brake on the joy of living.Under certain conditions and to a limited degree, the defenses let some impulses pass. The defenses vary according to the individuals, which therefore can be grouped into various types. In bioenergetic psychotherapy the various types of defenses are subsumed under the title of “character structures“. Character is defined as a fixed pattern of behavior and is the typical way in which an individual treats his pursuit of pleasure. Character is structured in the body in the form of chronic, usually unconscious, muscular tensions that block or limit the impulses to reach out to look for something. Character is also a psychic attitude supported by a system of negations, rationalizations and projections and regulated according to an ego ideal which affirms its value. The functional identity of a psychic character and body structure is the key to understanding the personality, because it allows us to read the character starting from the body and to explain a bodily attitude by tracing it back to its psychic representations and vice versa. The bioenergetic psychotherapist does not approach a patient by looking at him as a character type. He considers him a unique individual whose pursuit of pleasure is impeded by anxiety, anxiety against which he has erected certain typical defenses. Through an overview it is possible to observe the deeper problems and thus help the patient to free himself from the limits imposed on him by his past life experience.
